For one Doctor Albert Westgrove, it was a long night. He and his team of surgeons - plus one ex-Gizoid - spent hours patching up the wounds of the Mobian boy before them, trying to figure out the best way to carefully administer the contents of the Heal Unit, IV aside. While it was known that one could use an entire unit at once and be healed, Miles' case was different. The fox cub had lost a significant amount of blood and most of his injuries were internal. One mistake with this operation would be fatally disastrous.
And there was also the societal danger to consider.
This world they lived in had made many, many advancements in terms of what's accepted in society. Prejudice and degeneracy had been completely eliminated. Virtually all people had absolutely no problem conversing with one another and being friends, regardless of gender, orientation, ethnicity or so on. Even species was a moot issue.
Granted, some problems still remained (humans and Mobians still could not date or even marry without intense scrutiny), but for the most part, society as a whole had moved past the hang ups of the previous Great Civilizations.
Miles' death could potentially undo all of that. All it would take is one Mobian accusing Dr. Westgrove and his team for failing him on purpose out of racism or one ignorant human rejoicing such an outcome, and... Well, the possibilities were too nightmarish to think about. All the more reason why this had to work.

The sun soon began to rise over Soleanna, and gentle rays of light started to shine into the New City Hospital.
Sonic slept in his corner, twitching in his sleep from a bad nightmare that would not let him go. Knuckles slumbered in a meditative pose, something he had been meaning to resume anyway. Vanilla and Cream rested in their chairs next to Shadow and Amy. Rouge, true to her species, dozed whilst hanging from the ceiling, her wings wrapped around her.
When Dr. Westgrove walked into the waiting room, Rouge was the first to awaken, dropping down to the floor with drowsy grace, which woke up everyone else. "Give us some good news, Doc!" yawned Sonic as he stretched, trying his best to recollect himself and forget that horrible dream. The doctor considered teasing the group, but immediately thought better of it.
"Well, everyone, thanks to the Heal Unit, it looks like Miles will pull through." Everyone who was awake enough to cheer happily did so. Dr. Westgrove smiled and continued, "If you want to see him, please follow me."
As they followed Dr. Westgrove into the hall, Shadow pulled Sonic aside and asked, "Where exactly did you go after you were done with Lester?" The blue hedgehog looked to the side and answered, "I was out for a run," in a tone that screamed that he would say no more on the subject. As if to emphasize that, he said to Amy, "Just a run." She gave him a blank look in response, though she understood his brusque request for her to stay out of his head.

...Huh...?'
'Where...am I?'
'What happened...to me?'
'Oh, yeah. That jerk Metal Sonic attacked me...out of...nowhere...and...'
"...ails... Tails..."
'That voice... Sonic...?'
"Easy now, Sonic. He just got out of surgery. Give him time to rest..."
'Huh? Surgery? I'm...in a hospital?'
'Yes. You had us worried for a while, there.'
'What the heck?!'
'Oh, sorry, sweetie. It's me.'
'A-Amy? You...can read minds now?? That's kinda creepy...b-but cool, though!'
'It's ok, Tails. I'm still getting used to the implications myself. So, how are you feeling?'
'...Physically, I'm ok. Of course, since I'm in a hospital, I'm...probably on anesthetic or something.'
'Probably. What about emotionally?'
'...'
'Tails?'
'......The doctor said...I need time to rest, right?'
'Um, yeah.'
'Ok. When I wake up, I'll tell you and the gang what happened, but for now...let me sleep. Please?'
'...All right, Tails.'
