“Ahh! Fresh air, at last!” Amy happily exclaimed as she set foot onto the streets of Soleanna for the first time in months. Both she and Sonic were fully healed and their rehabilitation was complete. Though he hid it well, Sonic was happier than Amy to be free to move around again. He thought he’d go nuts if he had to sit in that hospital for one more day. “Heh, you read my mind, Amy. What a relief!” Amy blinked at that comment. “Hm? No, I didn’t, Sonic.” Sonic glanced at her with a confused look for a few moments before realizing what was said. “Oh, right. I forgot. Heh, I don’t think I’ll ever get used to those new powers of yours.”
Amy smiled at him in her shirt and sweatpants. “Yeah, I’m still learning quite a bit about them myself.” Sonic nodded as she added, “But, something’s been bugging me. How are we going to pay that hospital bill? I just know it’s gonna be steep…” Sonic shook his head and replied, “Nah, we don’t have to this time. Turns out the doctor here is a Station Square native who lived to see the beatdown I gave Perfect Chaos way back when. He said he treated us for free as thanks.”
“Wow, that’s nice of him!” Amy exclaimed in surprise. “Yep. That being said, though,” Sonic wryly continued, “If we knock each other here again, he’ll charge us double.”
“Yes, and he has every right to,” said a voice to their right. Shadow came walking up to them with his Vacuum Egg gun, which, oddly enough, looked to be about full. “Nice to see you too, Shad-“ Sonic halted in mid-sentence as he noticed his rival’s peculiar weapon. “Um, dude? My opinion of firearms aside, why the heck are you using that thing?”
Shadow’s expression was as unamused as ever. “First of all, not everything can be done with barehanded speed. You know that. Second, I just came back from a ‘visit’ with the Doctor. Thanks to his pathetic security, I’ve managed to cut down his forces considerably and we’ll have some spare items to use when he makes his next move.” He then ejected the balloon, which popped, producing Rings, various barriers and enhancers for the group. “Thanks, Shadow,” said Sonic, “These’ll come in handy!”
As Amy picked out a Flame Shield, she noticed Cream and Vanilla walking up to them. “Cream! Miss Vanilla! Hi!!” she greeted happily. Cream beamed, happy to see her best friend back to full health and ran up to Amy with a big hug. “Amy! Mr. Sonic! You’re all better!!” Vanilla smiled pleasantly as the two embraced each other. “Good to see the both of you doing better,” she said, nodding in approval before noticing the items. “Hm? What’s all this?” Sonic chuckled and answered, “Power Up Delivery Service, courtesy of the Ultimate Go-fer!” Shadow’s ears twitched in annoyance. “You wanna try that again?”
Amy giggled and said, “Now, now, boys. We just got out of the hospital. Let’s try to get along, ok?” Cream nodded in earnest. “Yes, Mr. Sonic, this is not a time to be fighting with Mr. Shadow. This is a happy day! Right, Mama?” Vanilla also nodded with a sweet smile.
“Sonic! Sonic!” called out a familiar voice from up above. The group raised their heads and saw Tails flying towards them, looking worse for wear. The boy attempted to call out again, but suddenly fell out of the sky!

Sonic acted quickly, dashing forward and catching his little brother before he hit the ground. Everyone quickly gathered around them, and noticed the reason for Tails’ quick landing: he was heavily wounded. His fur was singed, his clothes were torn up and he was bleeding everywhere. Amy gasped in horror as the state he was in, and Vanilla tried to shield the sight from her daughter. Cream, however, could not help but look, no matter how much it frightened her. “Tails, what happened?!” Sonic asked frantically.
“Sonic...I tried my best...I’m...sorry... I...c-couldn’t...” Sonic shook his head more frantically than intended. “It’s ok, bro. Don’t try to talk. We’ll get you inside.” Tails gripped Sonic’s repaired jacket desperately as he tried to relay his message. “No...listen... It’s...Eggman...he’s sent...out...”
His breathing got heavy as excruciating pain momentarily derailed his train of thought. “T-To beat you...to beat...us...he’s d-d-deployed...M...M...” Unfortunately, he could not finish his sentence before passing out. “Tails!” Sonic shouted, trying to shake him awake, “Tails, wake up! What did Eggman do?! Damn it, Miles, talk to me!!!” As Sonic kept trying, someone tapped his shoulder. The hedgehog whipped his head back to see Shadow, looking somber. He shook his own head.
Vanilla cleared her throat. “Sonic...we should get him inside, quickly.” Sonic nodded bitterly.

The group of Mobians waited impatiently outside the emergency room. Amy sat next to Shadow, gripping his hand worriedly. Cream kept seated in Vanilla’s lap, trying her hardest not to cry. Cheese would peek into the E.R. every now and then sadly, not daring to report any progress. Sonic, true to form, paced the room at a rate one would only see from him. It annoyed literally everyone present, strangers included, but no one said anything, knowing full well what he was feeling.
Just then, someone approached them. “Huh?” Sonic inquired, “What’s Gemerl doing here?” Vanilla answered, “I called him here, for support.” The ex-Gizoid nodded in response and sat next to her. As he did, the E.R. doors opened and the doctor, a human, walked out. Immediately Sonic asked, “How is he, doc?” Said doctor responded, “Well, he’s stable, but I have to be honest…he lost a lot of blood getting here. For someone his age and condition, it’s a miracle he survived that trip at all.” Sonic’s barely existent patience was wearing thin. “Is he gonna make it?”
The doctor hesitated briefly, which everyone noticed. “Mr. Doctor, sir,” Cream squeaked through tears that threatened to fall any moment, “Is my friend...going to live?” The doctor sighed. “I don’t know, miss. As I said, he’s lost a lot of blood.” Sonic glared at the floor angrily...
“Doctor,” spoke Shadow, “I might have something.” Everyone glanced at him as he brought out a large gun, loaded with blue orbs. “Whoa! Weapons are not allowed in this hospital, sir!” Amy leapt up to keep things under control. “It’s ok, Doctor, it's ok! Shadow, what exactly is that?” The black hedgehog replied, “It’s my Heal Cannon. GUN created this firearm solely for use by paramedics in the battlefield.”
Separating the gun in half, Shadow shook it a little, causing a Heal Unit to fall in his hand. Vanilla’s eyebrows raised and the doctor gaped. “That’s a military grade Heal Unit! How did you get that?” Shadow promptly said, “That’s military grade information, classified as none of your business. What matters is that it’ll help Tails’ recovery if your team uses it.” The doctor set aside his annoyance at the hedgehog’s rudeness and replied, “Hmm. For this treatment, we’d have to administer the unit liberally and strategically in order to give the full effect, but yes, that should help greatly. Thank you.”
The group of surgeons under him – two humans and a Mobian chipmunk - stepped out of the E.R. just then to join the doctor. “Oh, good,” the doctor spoke as they arrived. “Guys, we’ve just been given the key to save the boy’s life.” He politely took the Heal Unit from Shadow and showed it to his crew. “All we have to do is give him this Heal Unit through an IV and carefully monitor his progress. If all four of us work together, I’m sure we can-”
“I refuse.”
Everyone quickly looked at the one who said that damning sentence. It was the chipmunk. “I refuse to treat that fox.”
